Thorne Credit Union was formed in January 1999 to serve members of the GMB, Britain’s General Union, and their families. The Credit Union's mission is to promote a brighter financial future for members through a range of responsible and fair financial services.
Thorne Credit Union is owned by its members and has no outside shareholders. Any profits generated, less operational costs, stay within the membership. This profit is returned as an annual dividend. Thorne Credit Union seeks to encourage the savings habit amongst its members which creates a pool of money which in turn is the lent to members.
Thorne Credit Union is run by its members through appointed staff, a Board of Directors and a number of Committees which report to the Board, The Board and Committees are all volunteers and members of the GMB therefore they have a strong affinity with members which is reflected in the Credit Unions business plans. Members of the Board and various Committees are elected by members at the AGM.
